India’s urbanization is reminiscent of a dream factory. In Gurgaon, the “Millennium City” on the outskirts of Delhi, real estate advertisements offer up idyllic visions of the city of tomorrow. Inspired by the Indian tradition of studio photography, Arthur Crestani set out to meet the inhabitants of this burgeoning city. In the midst of its construction sites and new building complexes, enlarged and printed advertising images from real estate brochures served as the background for his photographs. Passersby, workers, and villagers he met on site were invited to pose in front of these entirely fabricated landscapes.
